The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency is the organisation responsible for the registration and accreditation of 10 health professions across Australia, including nurses and midwives.
The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia has determined that, as of 1 July 2010, each registered nurse and midwife will require a minimum of 20 hours of Continuing Professional Development per year to maintain their registration.
The tutorials provided by HealthStaffEd meet the requirements for Continuing Professional Development activities as set out by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
Do HealthStaffEd tutorials meet the requirements for Continuing Professional Development activities as set out by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia?
YES. All of the tutorials provided by HealthStaffEd have been developed by nurses for nurses and meet all of the requirement for Continuing Professional Development activities as set out by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
Do HealthStaffEd tutorials have any other criteria that they meet?
Yes. HealthStaffEd is endorsed by the Royal College of Nurses Australia (APEC number: 071107046) to award Continuing Nursing Education Points to nurses and midwives who complete HealthStaffEd tutorials.
In addition, HealthStaffEd is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) authorised to provide nationally accredited training (National Registration Code 88190).
How many hours of CPD do I require each year?
a) If you are a registered nurse you will require 20 hours of CPD per year.
b) If you are both a registered nurse and a registered midwife, you will require 20 hours of CPD for your nursing registration and an additional 20 hours of CPD for your midwifery registration. However, if CPD activities are relevant to nursing and midwifery professions, those activities may be counted as evidence for both nursing and midwifery CPD hours.
c) If you are an Eligible Midwife, you will require an additional 20 hours of CPD for your endorsement.
d) If you are a Nurse Practitioner, you will require an additional 10 hours of CPD for your endorsement.
If I am not practising as a clinical nurse, do I still need to do CPD?
Yes, the CPD undertaken needs to be relevant to your ‘context of practice’
Do I need to keep evidence of my CPD?
Yes, you should hold your evidence for three years in case you are selected for an audit. HealthStaffEd provides all registered users with the 'My CPD log book'. This will automatically log all HealthStaffEd tutorials. You can also manually enter other CPD activities undertaken.
What is Continuing Professional Development (CPD)?
Continuing professional development is the means by which members of the profession maintain, improve and broaden their knowledge, expertise and competence, and develop the personal and professional qualities required throughput their professional lives. The CPD cycle involves reviewing practice, identifying learning needs, planning and participating in relevant learning activities, and reflecting on the value of those activities (ANMC, 2009)
