Pressure ulcers: Prevention, staging and treatment(3/3)

CPD hours:
3

The aim for all patients is the prevention of pressure ulcers. When patients develop a pressure ulcer, or are admitted to a healthcare facility with a pressure ulcer, appropriate staging and treatment interventions can prevent serious complications.

Unfortunately, many people develop pressure ulcers requiring significant medical and nursing intervention.

Pressure ulcers cost almost $1 billion in healthcare expenditure annually in Australia and more than 500,000 lost hospital days.

Thorough patient assessment, as well as patient advocacy and use of appropriate resources, can prevent the development of pressure injuries, improve outcomes, reduce length of stay, and healthcare costs.

This module details the risk factors for skin damage, such as older age, immobility, and chronic conditions and diseases, and the signs and symptoms of skin damage and subsequent infection.

It discusses current best practice guidelines for the assessment of skin and prevention of pressure ulcers. It provides an overview of the stages of pressure ulcer development and the treatment options available.

There are two other modules related to this one. They are:

The skin: An introduction to the anatomy of the skin

The skin: Identifying and preventing skin damage

We suggest that members complete these two modules prior to undertaking this module.

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.

At the end of this module participants will be able to:
