Ostomy (stoma) care

CPD hours:
2

Ostomy and stoma are two commonly used terms to describe a surgical opening in the abdomen that has been created to collect faeces (colostomy or ileostomy), or urine (urostomy). They may be temporary or permanent. In aged care facilities, it is the responsibility of those providing nursing care to ensure that residents receive best practice ostomy care in order to prevent complications and optimise health and quality of life.

The following module highlights essential aspects of stoma care. It outlines five recommendations to care for stomas in an aged care setting.

Please note that residential aged care facilities will often have facility specific guidelines regarding stoma management. All those involved in care should refer to their local policies.

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.

At the end of this module participants will be able to:

  • Work with residents to set goals and create a holistic ostomy care plan.
  • Know when it is appropriate to seek input from a qualified stoma or wound care nurse, if available.
  • Select the simplest ostomy product that meets the needs of the individual.
  • Participate in discussions with the care team on care planning, as required.
  • Identify common stoma-related complications.

At the end of this module participants will be able to:

  • This is learning objective 1.
  • This is learning objective 2.
  • This is learning objective 3.
  • This is learning objective 4.
  • This is learning objective 5.
  • This is learning objective 6.
