The role of physiotherapy in the management of neurodegenerative disorders

CPD hours:
2

Neurodegenerative disorders are a group of progressive neurological diseases that cause worsening motor, cognitive and autonomic dysfunction over time. Recent advances in international research, best-practice evidence, and clinical guidelines have underscored the role of physiotherapy in the management of neurodegenerative disorders.

Physiotherapy guidelines based on systematic reviews of best available evidence have since been published for many of these conditions.

The following module will review neurodegenerative disorders with a particular focus on Parkinson’s disease and Huntington’s disease.

This module reviews neurodegenerative disorders with a particular focus on Parkinson’s disease and Huntington’s disease. It discusses treatments and highlights the role of physiotherapy in patient management by reviewing goals of therapy, treatment options, special considerations, and appropriate outcome measures for this patient population.

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.

At the end of this module participants will be able to:

  • Describe neurodegenerative disorders including clinical features, symptoms and specific conditions,
  • Understand the unique features of Parkinson’s disease and Huntington’s disease,
  • Describe the goals of physiotherapy in the management of neurodegenerative disorders,
  • Outline the recommended interventions based on patient condition or stage of illness, and
  • Outline outcome measures that are appropriate for identifying baseline function

At the end of this module participants will be able to:

  • This is learning objective 1.
  • This is learning objective 2.
  • This is learning objective 3.
