Venepuncture: A step-by-step procedural guide

CPD hours:
1

Intravenous cannulation is an invasive procedure performed on a significant proportion of all patients admitted to hospital. It is performed in outpatient clinics and the community health care environment.

In order to ensure patient safety and comfort, all nurses and midwives performing intravenous cannulation must ensure proficiency in their technique.

Competency is essential

This is the 5th in a series of 5 modules on venepuncture and cannulation. The 5 modules are:

  • Indications and vein selection
  • Equipment selection
  • Special considerations for paediatrics and neonates
  • Venepuncture - A step-by-step procedural guide
  • Cannulation - A step-by-step procedural guide

This module provides a step-by-step guide on how to perform intravenous cannulation, common complications, and the appropriate interventions when complications do arise.

Caution:

Prior to undertaking cannulation, nurses and midwives should check local policies and access the appropriate practical training and competency assessments. Only those deemed competent should perform intravenous cannulation.

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.

By the end of this module, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the step-by-step procedure for performing intravenous cannulation.
  • Identify how the five moments of hand hygiene are applied to cannulation procedures.
  • List the possible complications of intravenous cannulation and understand what to do if they should arise.

At the end of this module participants will be able to:

  • This is learning objective 1.
  • This is learning objective 2.
  • This is learning objective 3.
  • This is learning objective 4.
  • This is learning objective 5.
  • This is learning objective 6.
