Violence in the healthcare workplace: Predicting, preventing, and managing violence (1/3)

CPD hours:
3

This course provides a comprehensive guide to how to manage violence and aggression in the healthcare workplace. It is aimed at all healthcare workers and health service managers. Every level of a healthcare organisation requires effective strategies to reduce the incidence of violence directed at healthcare workers and to improve the response to violence.

All participants will gain an in depth understanding of how to deal with all stages of an incident involving violence and/or aggression.

There are three modules in this course:

1. Violence in the healthcare workplace:  Predicting, preventing, and managing violence

2. Violence in the healthcare workplace:  Managing acute severe behavioural disturbances

3. Violence in the healthcare workplace: Post violent incident response

This module is related to the Australian National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards as part of Standard Five: Comprehensive Care. It is specifically relevant to Action 5.33 and 5.34: Predicting, preventing, and managing aggression and violence.

It aligns to, and is consistent with, state and territory department of health guidelines and policies on managing violence and aggression in healthcare and the key principles outlined in the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services’ ‘Guide for violence and aggression training in Victorian health services.’

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.

At the end of this module participants will be able to:

  • Identify their role, and the role of others in preventing and managing violence and aggression in the workplace.
  • Identify tools for predicting violence and aggression in the workplace.
  • Understand risk factors and triggers of violence and aggression in healthcare.
  • Be familiar with risk assessments that may be used to assess the risk of violence and aggression in some settings.
  • Identify warning signs of escalation and challenging behaviours that may result in violence and aggression.

  • This is learning objective 4.
